What the Anthropic-Blackstone JV actually means

$1.5B is a number. The structure of the deal is the story.

Newsletter
“The deal structure tells you who's going to win the next 24 months.”

The number — $1.5B — is what every headline led with. It's the wrong thing to focus on.

The structure is the story. Anthropic contributes models + the FDE workforce. Blackstone contributes deal flow from its 250+ portfolio companies. Goldman handles the financial engineering and underwrites cost-plus-fee contracts. Engagements run 90 days minimum with FDE pairs embedded onsite, fee structure of $1.2M setup + $80K/mo retainer.

Three implications:

Mid-market is the battleground. The JV's first three signed engagements are all mid-market portcos, not Fortune 500. The structure (90-day pairs, cost-plus) is too expensive for Fortune 500 and too cheap to compete with McKinsey. It's perfectly positioned for the $100M–$2B revenue band — which is exactly where most operators sit.

The implementer workforce becomes the binding constraint. Anthropic has ~400 FDEs today. The JV math says they need 1,200 to fully deploy capital in 24 months. They are not going to hire 800 from scratch — they will partner with platforms that aggregate verified implementers. (Yes, we are paying attention.)

Compete against the JV, not with it. Mid-market operators who don't want Anthropic + Blackstone in their org chart will pay a premium for independent talent. That's the market FDEOS is built for, and it's the largest band.

Full breakdown of the deal structure, the implications by vertical, and what we expect the next two JVs to look like — below.
