Forward Deployed Engineer (FDE)

also: Forward Deployed Software Engineeralso: FDSE

An engineer who embeds with a customer to ship AI inside their walls. Pioneered at Palantir; productized at Anthropic.

A Forward Deployed Engineer (FDE) is a software engineer who works on-site or near-site with an enterprise customer to deliver AI solutions inside the customer's existing stack. The pattern originated at Palantir in the early 2010s and was productized at Anthropic in 2024. As of Q2 2026, median FDE total compensation in the US is $267,000 USD, up 22% year-over-year. Anthropic, OpenAI's Development Co, Google Cloud, Stripe, Reflection, and the Anthropic + Blackstone JV all employ this title.

Applied AI Engineer

A product-org engineer who builds the AI features customers actually touch — RAG, fine-tunes, agent orchestration, eval harnesses.

An Applied AI Engineer sits inside a product team and ships customer-facing AI capabilities. They differ from Forward Deployed Engineers in that they don't embed with end customers — they own the model integration inside one product. Median total comp is $237,000 USD as of Q2 2026.

AI Solutions Engineer

A pre-sales + post-sales engineer who pairs with the sales team to land enterprise AI pilots and convert them to production.

An AI Solutions Engineer (SE) is responsible for taking a customer from interest → proof-of-concept → production deployment of an AI product. Distinct from a Forward Deployed Engineer in that the SE is anchored to a vendor's product, not the customer's stack. Median total comp $213,000 USD as of Q2 2026.

AI Implementation Engineer

An engineer who owns the deployment lifecycle for a specific AI platform — Vertex, Bedrock, Cortex, Foundry, AIP.

Implementation Engineers are platform-bound. They embed at anchor customers to drive adoption of a specific AI platform their employer sells. Often confused with FDE; the difference is that an Implementation Engineer is constrained to one vendor product whereas an FDE picks the right tool.

AI implementer

FDEOS's umbrella term for the four engineering patterns that ship production AI inside customer workflows.

AI implementer is the canonical role family at FDEOS, covering: Forward Deployed Engineer, Applied AI Engineer, AI Solutions Engineer, and AI Implementation Engineer. Every job in the FDEOS feed is classified by Claude Haiku to a 0-100 implementer-fit score; only roles scoring ≥60 surface to the public feed.

FDEOS platform

FDEOS

OS for the AI implementer economy — aggregated jobs, verified directory, voice intake, weekly intelligence.

FDEOS is a multi-sided platform launched in May 2026 serving Forward Deployed Engineers, Applied AI engineers, AI consultants, and the operators hiring them. Core surfaces: a daily-refreshed jobs board, a verified implementer directory with tiered trust (Bronze/Silver/Gold), an AI voice intake for both hiring (12-minute Vapi call) and joining (5-minute structured intake), and a weekly Monday newsletter.

Founding 100

The first 100 verified implementers on FDEOS. Lifetime Pro, Gold badge, permanent leaderboard placement.

The Founding 100 program caps at 100 implementers, ever. Membership confers a lifetime Pro subscription ($19/mo retail), Gold verification, permanent leaderboard placement on fdeos.com/founding-100, monthly founder office hours, and first-look access to Founding Partner agency leads. Spot #100 will be auctioned for charity when filled.

Founding Partner agency network

FDEOS's network of licensed recruiting agencies. They run the search; FDEOS never charges a placement fee.

Founding Partners are licensed recruiting agencies who operate under their own contracts with employers. FDEOS routes hire-intent intakes to a relevant Founding Partner agency and earns subscription + per-lead fees from the agency. We never charge a placement fee or commission to either side. Each agency sets its own placement fee under its own terms with the employer.

Founding Hiring Partner

FDEOS program offering the first implementer placement free to 10 hand-picked mid-market employers.

Founding Hiring Partner is a pre-launch program for ten mid-market or PE-backed employers ($20M-$2B revenue band) with an open implementer role by Q3 2026. We connect them with a licensed Founding Partner agency that runs the search at zero fee in exchange for case-study rights and a permanent badge on /press. As of May 2026, 4 of 10 slots filled.

Founding Partner upgrade is the path from self-serve Talent Search to working with a licensed recruiting agency in the FDEOS Founding Partner network. The agency takes the brief, runs the search under its own contract with you, and FDEOS earns a subscription + per-lead fee from the agency. FDEOS itself never collects a placement fee — the agency's fee is set and invoiced by them directly.

Anthropic-Blackstone JV

$1.5B joint venture (May 2026) deploying FDE pairs into Blackstone-portfolio mid-market companies on 90-day engagements.

The Anthropic + Blackstone + Goldman Sachs joint venture announced May 2026 commits $1.5B to forward-deployed engineering services. Structure: Anthropic contributes models + FDE workforce, Blackstone contributes portfolio deal flow, Goldman handles financial engineering. Engagements run 90 days minimum with FDE pairs embedded onsite. Fee: $1.2M setup + $80K/mo retainer. First three engagements signed within 60 days of announcement — all mid-market.

Verification tiers

Bronze tier

Implementer verification level 1: work email confirmed.

Bronze tier is the lowest verification tier on FDEOS. Granted automatically when an implementer's work email is confirmed via magic link. Visible in the public directory but cannot access #deal-flow in the community or appear in employer Talent Search results.

Silver tier

Implementer verification level 2: LinkedIn + GitHub + one reference attached.

Silver tier requires linked LinkedIn and GitHub profiles plus one human reference. Silver unlocks one-click apply across the jobs feed, weekly digest emails, #deal-flow access, and visibility in Talent Search.

Gold tier

Implementer verification level 3: manually vetted by FDEOS or confirmed by a paying employer.

Gold tier is the highest verification tier. Granted via manual review by FDEOS or automatically when a paying employer reports a successful hire of the implementer. Gold implementers receive priority surfacing in employer shortlists, the Gold badge, and first-look at Founding Partner agency leads before they reach the public feed.

Intake & routing

Hire intake

The 12-question, ~12-minute chat flow that buyers complete to receive an AI Hiring Roadmap and a 3–5 implementer shortlist.

The Hire Intake is FDEOS's core conversion mechanic for the demand side. Buyers answer 12 questions covering workflow, current stack, budget, urgency, decision-making process, and timeline. Output: a branded AI Hiring Roadmap, an internal Deal Brief used for routing, and a curated shortlist of 3–5 verified implementers. Email is requested at the end of the flow (the 'email gate'), which lifts completion rate by 30–40% relative to email-first intake.

A/B/C lead tier

FDEOS's routing tier system. A-leads get founder ping in 4 hours, B-leads get 24-hour shortlist, C-leads route to self-serve Talent Search.

Every hire intake is scored on Budget × Urgency × Fit × Authority (1–5 each). Score ≥4.0 → A-tier (founder direct outreach). Score 3.0–3.9 → B-tier (automated nurture + 24-hour shortlist). Score <3.0 → C-tier (self-serve Talent Search funnel). Scorecard is overridable by FDEOS admins.

Compensation

As of May 2026, Claude appears in 64% of implementer job postings, GPT-4o in 48%, RAG in 41%, Cursor in 34%, voice-agent platforms (Vapi/ElevenLabs/Retell/Bland) in 7.57%, LangGraph in 22%, and n8n in 18%. Fluency in Claude + Cursor + RAG + one voice platform + one workflow tool covers ~85% of postings.

Vapi

Voice-agent platform powering FDEOS's voice intake and 7.57% of implementer-role mentions.

Vapi is a voice-agent infrastructure provider used by FDEOS for its 12-question hire intake. As of Q2 2026, Vapi and adjacent voice platforms (ElevenLabs, Retell, Bland) appear in 7.57% of implementer job postings, up from 4.1% in February 2026 — an 84% growth in 90 days.

Claude prompt caching

Anthropic feature that stores prompt prefixes for 5 minutes; reads cost 0.1× normal, writes cost 1.25×.

Claude prompt caching, GA in February 2025, lets you mark a prefix of your messages array as cacheable. Subsequent calls within 5 minutes that re-use that prefix pay 0.1× the input-token rate. Break-even is two requests in 5 minutes; for implementer workloads with stable system prompts + tool definitions, typical cost reduction is 80-90%.

Cursor

AI-native code editor; appears in 34% of implementer job postings as of May 2026.

Cursor (by Anysphere) is an AI-native fork of VS Code optimized for code generation, refactoring, and codebase navigation with Claude or GPT-4o. In May 2026 it appears in 34% of implementer postings, up from 22% a year earlier. Implementers building real systems are expected to be fluent in Cursor's agent + composer modes.

n8n

Open-source workflow automation tool used by ~18% of implementer postings — the dark-horse mid-market choice.

n8n is an open-source workflow automation platform that competes with Zapier and Make. It's the canonical choice for non-code-first implementers building ops automation in mid-market. n8n appears in 18% of implementer postings as of May 2026; n8n Cloud Enterprise (SOC2 + dedicated tenant) launched in April 2026 and pulled the title into more regulated industries.

LangGraph

LangChain's stateful agent orchestration framework — appears in 22% of implementer postings.

LangGraph is the canonical choice for agentic workflows with persistent memory, checkpointing, and human-in-the-loop. As of May 2026 it appears in 22% of implementer postings, ahead of bare LangChain. v0.6 (April 2026) added persistent memory + checkpointing as first-class features.
