“Anthropic alone is a $1B+ FDE shop. The market has only just noticed.”
In May 2026 Anthropic, Blackstone, and Goldman Sachs stood up a $1.5B joint venture for forward-deployed engineering services to PE portfolio companies. OpenAI raised $4B at a $10B valuation for a "Development Company" arm explicitly modeled on the Palantir FDE function. Google Cloud opened 59 Forward Deployed Engineer roles in a single week.
If you squint at the labor-market data, you can see the repricing that follows. Median FDE total comp crossed $267K this week, up 22% year-over-year, and up 4.1% in just the last seven days. Solutions Engineer comp, which sat ~$30K below FDE for most of 2024, is now $45K below — even as it grows in absolute terms. The market is figuring out which titles compound and which don't.
What's interesting is that none of this is a surprise. Karp said it on the Palantir Q4 2024 call: the FDE function is the bottleneck on revenue, not the model. Dario Amodei said it in his April 2026 letter: 'our scarcest resource is the engineer who can sit at a customer's table and ship.' What's new is that the rest of the market believed them.
This piece walks through the mechanics of the repricing, the four archetypes of implementer the market is now bidding on, and what it means for the labor pool that has — until now — been hiding in plain sight on career-ops Discord and the Replit forums.
